Use Yesterday to Make Tomorrow Awesome Today!

Each day brings with it a fresh opportunity to shape our future. Yesterday, with its challenges and triumphs, has bid us farewell, but it’s lessons can become powerful catalysts for a more successful tomorrow. The ebb and flow of life’s journey ensure that no day is an isolated entity; rather, each is a continuum of experiences that leaves an indelible mark on us personally.
As yesterday fades, its lessons linger…whispering wisdom and offering profound insights. It is these very lessons that can serve as the cornerstone for a future characterized by growth, resilience, and fulfillment. Let’s look at some practical steps that you and I can take to focus on today, using the canvas of yesterday’s experiences to paint a brighter and more fulfilling future.
1: Embrace Yesterday’s Lessons
Begin by acknowledging that every setback, every failure, and every triumph of yesterday is a valuable lesson. Embrace these experiences as stepping stones toward personal and professional growth. By understanding the root causes of yesterday’s challenges, you pave the way for a more informed and strategic approach today.2: Reflect and Learn
Take a moment to reflect on the events of yesterday. What worked well, and what could have been done differently? Be honest with yourself in assessing your actions and decisions. Recognize that mistakes are not failures but opportunities to learn and improve. Use this reflection as a tool to refine your strategies and decision-making today.3: Set Clear Goals for Today
Define clear and achievable goals for today. Break them down into smaller, manageable tasks to maintain focus and motivation. By setting realistic objectives, you create a roadmap for success. Ensure that your goals align with the lessons learned from yesterday, steering you away from repeating past mistakes.4: Practice Mindfulness
Stay present in the current moment. Mindfulness allows you to fully engage with today’s tasks and experiences. By letting go of lingering regrets or anxieties from yesterday, you open yourself up to new opportunities and creative solutions. Mindfulness empowers you to make the most of the present, positively impacting your future.5: Cultivate a Growth Mindset
Foster a growth mindset that sees challenges as opportunities for development. Understand that your abilities and intelligence can be developed with dedication and effort. This mindset shift allows you to approach each day with resilience and a willingness to learn from both successes and failures.Wisdom From The Word
Proverbs 4:25-27 tells us, “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.”I love this passage. It encourages us to maintain perspective. We need to carefully consider our past paths as well as the paths that might lead us astray so that the actions and choices we make can have a positive impact on us…and those around us. It emphasizes the importance of staying focused on the present path and avoiding distractions or deviations. In the context of making today impactful for a better tomorrow, this scripture underscores the value of intentional and purposeful living.
Bottom Line Y’all…
As the day unfolds, remember that today is the bridge between yesterday and tomorrow. By embracing yesterday’s lessons, reflecting on experiences, setting clear goals, practicing mindfulness, and cultivating a growth mindset, we can turn today into a powerful platform for creating a more successful and fulfilling tomorrow. Seize the opportunity to make today awesome, and let it be the foundation for the brighter days that lie ahead.Foster a growth mindset that sees challenges as opportunities for development. What We Practice Privately Will Define Us Publically

My journey of personal development has been a commitment to physical transformation…sure, but within its challenges lies a profound lesson that extends way beyond mere weight loss or fitness. It’s about the cultivation of character, particularly the unwavering commitment to integrity when the spotlight is absent.
Yesterday was day 17 of this round of the 75 Hard program. On this 17th day… I forgot to take my progress picture… which is a daily requirement of the program. I woke up this morning and thought, “DADGUMIT!” At that moment, I could have easily lied to the app, snapped a picture, uploaded it and gone about my day as if nothing happened. Nobody would have known. BUT…I would have known.
The Crossroads of Choice: A Missed Progress Picture and a Lesson Learned
When the alarm sounded this morning, I instantly knew something pretty crucial had happened. An accidental slip in the routine. I forgot to snap the daily progress picture. No biggie! Sounds like a tiny blip, right? But in that moment, I faced a decision that could’ve easily gone unnoticed. I could’ve faked a picture, tricked the app, and no one would’ve been the wiser. Yet, at the core of it all, there was a bigger choice to make. One that boiled down to integrity.
Imagine the temptation to take the easy route, to slide a fake pic into the system, and poof… problem solved. But instead, there was this conscious decision to stay true. It wasn’t about the app or the world; it was about a deeper commitment to honesty, even when no one was peeking.
When faced with this seemingly “small blip on the radar”, the choice to keep it real (i.e. be honest to myself) spoke volumes. It was a nod to the idea that this journey isn’t just about ticking off boxes or hitting physical goals. It’s about a change within. A transformation that’s anchored in the honesty we show ourselves when the spotlight isn’t glaring. It was a reminder that personal growth isn’t just about the showy stuff; it’s about the everyday choices that quietly shape who we are becoming.
Character Development: The Hidden Pillar of Personal Excellence
The benefits to losing weight and getting healthy are undeniable, but the true essence of personal excellence stretches beyond the visible transformations that catch the eye. It delves into the intricacies of character development, a process that unfolds in the private corners of one’s life. While the exterior changes may attract attention, it is the profound impact of private choices that molds the journey from the “lesser” self to the “extraordinary” self. Character development involves a continuous, intentional commitment to moral and ethical principles, a dedication to self-reflection, and an unwavering pursuit of personal growth.
In this realm of personal development, private choices act as the building blocks that shape the narrative of one’s character. The decisions made behind closed doors, when no external judgment is at play, reveal the true nature of an individual’s commitment to integrity, resilience, and authenticity. It is in the moments when no one is watching that the transformation occurs—when the decision to act with honesty, uphold promises made to oneself, and navigate challenges with grace is paramount.
Personal excellence, therefore, becomes a journey of self-discovery and self-discipline. It is an acknowledgment that the “extraordinary” self is not just a product of external accomplishments but a testament to the strength of character developed through countless private choices. As individuals navigate this transformative path, they realize that the unseen efforts, the quiet victories, and the adherence to values when no one is looking contribute significantly to the profound evolution from a “lesser” existence to an “extraordinary” life.
The Unseen Benefits of Unyielding Integrity
1. Inner Harmony and Authenticity: Integrity grants us inner harmony. Authenticity becomes our guiding light, leading us towards a more genuine and honest version of ourselves.
2. Resilience and Self-Reliance: Integrity is the cornerstone of resilience. Amid challenges, the self-reliance fostered through unwavering integrity becomes an unshakable source of strength.
3. A Ripple Effect on Others: Our unseen actions echo louder than those in the limelight. By embodying integrity, we become catalysts for positive change, inspiring others to follow the path of authenticity.
The Call to Embrace Character Development
We are often fixated on external accomplishments. Whether career milestones, societal recognition, or physical transformations. The true essence of personal excellence resides in the often overlooked realm of character development. While external achievements may bring temporary satisfaction, it is the internal transformation that lays the foundation for lasting fulfillment and genuine success. The journey of personal excellence is not merely a superficial metamorphosis of the physical self but rather an intricate and profound redefinition of one’s entire being. It calls for a deep exploration of values, principles, and the cultivation of virtues that withstand the test of time. Character development becomes the cornerstone upon which the edifice of personal excellence is constructed, shaping individuals into resilient, principled, and authentic beings capable of navigating life’s challenges with grace and integrity. In essence, it’s an invitation to transcend the superficial allure of external validation and embark on a journey that goes beyond the surface, seeking a richer, more meaningful transformation from within.
Examples of Unseen Integrity
1. Diligent Task Execution: Consistently approaching tasks with diligence, irrespective of acknowledgment, manifests a commitment to personal growth and excellence.
2. Truth in Communication: Choosing honesty in communication, even when tempted by the easier path, builds trust in personal and professional relationships alike.
3. Upholding Promises to Oneself: The promises made in solitude—the ones known only to you—serve as the foundation for the extraordinary version of yourself. Uphold them with unwavering commitment.
Wisdom From The Word
The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. ~Proverbs 11:3
King Solomon understood that maintaining integrity serves as a guiding force for those of us who truly want to experience personal excellence in all we do. It shapes our actions and decisions. Conversely, those who lack integrity may face consequences due to their laziness, lack of conviction, and flat out ignorance. Having integrity… staying above reproach… aligns with the concept of personal excellence and the transformative power of maintaining honesty and authenticity, even in private moments.
Bottom Line Y’all…
As we navigate our journey of personal development, we need to recognize that personal excellence is not solely about public achievements. It’s about the unseen choices, the moments of integrity that intricately weave a tapestry of excellence through our character. Embrace these moments, for within them lies the true definition of the extraordinary self.

The Power of Sacrifice

Embarking on the journey toward success, be it physical, mental, spiritual, or financial success, often demands more than just ambition—it requires sacrifice. The saying, “If you want to accomplish very little, sacrifice very little,” encapsulates the timeless truth that achieving significant goals involves intentional choices and substantial sacrifices. Let us quickly delve into the nuanced nature of sacrifice, uncover practical steps to embrace it, and draw wisdom from God’s Word as it relates to the profound connection between sacrifice and enduring success.
Understanding the Nature of Sacrifice:
Sacrifice transcends the simple act of giving up something; it’s a deliberate investment in one’s future. It involves discerning between short-term discomfort and long-term gain, with the understanding that the sacrifices made today pave the way for a more fulfilling tomorrow. Overcoming the fear associated with sacrifice is crucial, as success often lies beyond the boundaries of our comfort zones.
While embracing sacrifice on the path to success, it is crucial to emphasize that sacrifices should be made in a thoughtful and beneficial manner, avoiding harm to oneself or others. The essence of sacrifice lies in making choices that contribute positively to long-term goals without compromising well-being or ethical principles. It’s essential to strike a balance, ensuring that the sacrifices undertaken lead to growth and fulfillment rather than causing detriment. Healthy sacrifice involves discernment, focusing on actions that align with personal values and aspirations while maintaining a holistic perspective on the well-being of oneself and those around. Ultimately, the journey to success should be marked not only by achievements but also by a sense of integrity and positive impact.
Practical Steps to Sacrifice More So We Can Gain More:
1. Embrace Delayed Gratification: Sacrifice often means delaying immediate pleasures for future rewards. By resisting instant gratification, individuals can channel their energy and focus into endeavors that promise lasting success.
2. Invest in Education and Skill Development: Sacrificing time and resources for continuous learning and skill development is an investment that pays dividends throughout one’s career. The commitment to staying relevant and competitive is a sacrifice that reaps rewards in professional growth.
3. Cultivate Resilience: Resilience is a key ingredient in the sacrifice-success equation. Setbacks are inevitable, but the ability to learn from failures and persevere in the face of challenges is what separates those who achieve enduring success from those who falter.
Wisdom From The Word:
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
~Matthew 6:19-21This Biblical passage underscores the transient nature of earthly possessions and emphasizes the enduring value of spiritual and eternal investments. Sacrificing worldly comforts for a higher purpose aligns with this profound principle.
But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.
~Philippians 3:7-8Paul’s words highlight the willingness to sacrifice worldly gains for a greater spiritual calling. This principle encourages sacrificing what hinders spiritual growth and connection for the sake of a deeper, more meaningful purpose.
Bottom Line Y’all…
As we navigate the intricate relationship between sacrifice and success, it becomes clear that sacrifice is not a mere trade-off; it’s a transformative process. By understanding the profound nature of sacrifice, overcoming fears, and aligning actions with deeper principles, individuals can embark on a journey that leads to not only personal success but also a meaningful and purposeful life. The sacrifices made today lay the foundation for the triumphs of tomorrow, reminding us that the path to lasting triumph is paved with intentional choices and a willingness to navigate the depths of sacrifice.

Plant Your Flag On The Solution…Not The Problem!

As we journey down the path of life, it’s not uncommon to find ourselves entrenched in a quagmire of problems, consumed by the daunting nature of various challenges…and sometimes… flat out “stuck”. And there we stand. Frozen, like a deer in the headlights, staring at some perceived problem that has us stopped dead in our tracks. But what if the key to progress lies not in dwelling on these issues but in shifting our focus towards the solutions they demand?
Too often, we fixate on the problems themselves, allowing fear and anxiety to overshadow any steps towards improvement. In my case, it’s health setbacks (aka laziness), financial strain, and even spiritual stagnation. You may have similar problems…or your issues may be completely different…either way, the gravitational pull of these problems can be overwhelming, trapping us in a cycle of stagnation.
Instead of being swallowed by the enormity of these issues, it’s crucial to adopt a paradigm shift – to plant our flag firmly on the terrain of solutions. This shift in perspective is transformative, guiding us away from the paralyzing effects of anxiety and towards a proactive approach rooted in progress.
Consider health challenges, for instance. Rather than succumbing to the fear of illness or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of a healthier lifestyle, focusing on solutions empowers us to take charge. It could involve setting small, achievable goals like incorporating daily exercise or making gradual dietary changes, thereby steering the narrative towards a healthier, more vibrant life.
Similarly, financial hurdles can be all-consuming. Yet, planting our flag on the solution entails taking concrete steps – creating a budget, seeking financial advice, or exploring additional income streams. It’s about channeling energy into actions that pave the way towards stability and comfort.
In the pursuit of spiritual growth, too, fixating on the problems of this world might lead to doubts and uncertainties. Shifting the focus to the Jesus (and His infinite power) and building that relationship, strengthens our faith. Engaging in practices that foster a deeper connection with God is crucial to the health of our Christian walk. We must constantly study God’s Word, seek out His advice and guidance through prayer, and find community support within our church and circle of Christian friends and family.
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” ~ Matthew 6:33
Note, these focal shifts don’t disregard the existence of the problems; instead, it reframes our response. By acknowledging the problem and swiftly directing our energy towards the solution, we reclaim our goals and momentum. This deliberate choice redirects our narrative from one of despair to one of empowerment.
Planting our flag on solutions is an intentional act of courage and resilience. It’s a commitment to refuse the paralyzing grip of problems and, instead, to chart a course towards growth and fulfillment.
Remember, the pathway of progress isn’t always a straight line, and setbacks may arise…requiring us to PIVOT, and change direction. By consistently focusing on the solution, we cultivate a mindset that transcends obstacles and fuels continuous improvement across the realms of health, wealth, and spiritual well-being.
So, I want to encourage you to take action today! Let’s plant our flags boldly on the fertile ground of solutions, nurturing a life characterized by progress, resilience, and unwavering faith.

Choose Your Words Wisely!

In a world filled with words, from casual conversations to digital dialogues, we often underestimate the impact our language can have on others. The Bible teaches us that the words we speak should serve a higher purpose – to help and bring value to those who listen. Let’s explore the profound wisdom that God shares with us through the Bible regarding the power of our words and how they can either build up or break down those He brings into our life.
Proverbs 15:4
“The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”
This verse from Proverbs emphasizes the contrast between the words that soothe and give life and those that are perverse and crush the spirit. It reminds us that our words have the power to heal and nurture, or to harm and destroy.
Ephesians 4:29
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
In Ephesians, we are instructed to use our words to build others up and benefit those who listen. This scripture underscores the idea that our speech should be tailored to the needs of those we are communicating with, and it should always aim to provide value.
Proverbs 18:21
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
This proverb reveals the incredible power our words hold – they can give life or bring death. It reminds us that the words we speak not only affect others but also have consequences for ourselves.
Colossians 4:6
“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”
Colossians encourages us to season our conversations with grace and wisdom. Our words should be a source of encouragement and enlightenment, always ready to provide answers that help and bring value.
Bottom Line Y’all…
God makes it clear that our words are a powerful tool, capable of either building up or breaking down those who hear us. As we navigate our daily interactions, let us remember that our speech should be guided by the principles of love, kindness, and the desire to bring value to those around us. In doing so, we can fulfill the divine purpose of our words… which is to positively impact the lives of others.
Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others. A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted. An honest witness tells the truth; a false witness tells lies. Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. Truthful words stand the test of time, but lies are soon exposed. Deceit fills hearts that are plotting evil; joy fills hearts that are planning peace! No harm comes to the godly, but the wicked have their fill of trouble. The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth. The wise don’t make a show of their knowledge, but fools broadcast their foolishness. Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave. Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up. The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray. Lazy people don’t even cook the game they catch, but the diligent make use of everything they find. ~ Proverbs 12:15-27

Finding True Identity: Peace Amidst the Storm

Life often has a way of throwing unexpected storms our way, and sometimes, these storms are far more powerful and destructive than we could ever anticipate. A few days ago, I found myself in the midst of such a storm—a horrific hailstorm with softball-sized hail that wreaked havoc in our neighborhood. Everything that we typically use to define our success and status… suddenly lay shattered and broken. It was in the aftermath of this natural disaster that I came to a profound realization: my true identity is not rooted in earthly possessions or circumstances but in Christ Jesus.
The Storm
As the softball-sized hail pounded our home, shattering windows and pelting our property like bullets and shrapnel from a warzone, it felt like the world was collapsing around me. The house I had invested so much in, the cars I treasured, and the yard my wife Courtney and I had lovingly cultivated for six months were all laid to waste. It was a moment of reckoning that forced me to question what truly defined me and gave me a sense of purpose.
In the days that followed, I found myself immersed in the chaos of debris cleanup, dealing with insurance agents, home inspectors, and roofers. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, a quiet realization began to emerge from within—a realization that the material possessions and external trappings I had once associated with my identity were ephemeral and could be taken away in an instant.
The Aftermath
It was during one quiet moment, as I sat in my chair, contemplating the storm’s aftermath, that it hit me like a bolt of lightning. The only unwavering, eternal truth in my life is my identity in Christ Jesus. In that moment of revelation, a profound sense of peace washed over me.
In the face of destruction, I realized that the only constant in life, the only true anchor for my soul, is my faith in Christ. The storm may have taken away my material possessions, but it couldn’t take away my identity in Him. It couldn’t touch the love and grace that Christ had bestowed upon me.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. ~Romans 8:38-39
The Blessings
In the midst of the devastation, there were blessings to count. My beautiful wife, Courtney, emerged from the storm unscathed. Our daughters were safely away from home when the hailstorm hit, shielding them from harm’s way. Even our dogs, including the new puppy who had narrowly escaped a shattering window (and now has a touch of PTSD…don’t take him through the carwash…ask me how I know) were safe.
This experience served as a stark reminder that our true identity isn’t defined by our houses, cars, meticulously landscaped yards, pets, or even family. Our true identity is found in our relationship with Christ. When we depart from this world, all our possessions will fade into obscurity and be forgotten, but our identity in Christ will endure for eternity.
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. ~ 2 Corinthians 4:18
Bottom Line Y’all…
The devastating hail storm that swept through our neighborhood may have stripped away some tangible markers of my identity, but it ultimately revealed a deeper truth. Our true identity is not found in the transient things of this world but in our connection to Christ Jesus. In times of turmoil and chaos, it is this unshakable foundation that provides the peace and solace we so desperately need.
As we navigate the storms of life, may we remember that our identity in Christ is the one thing that remains constant, unwavering, and eternal. In the face of devastation (of all kinds), we can find solace, purpose, and hope by grounding ourselves in Him. Our true identity in Christ transcends earthly possessions, and it is a source of enduring peace that no storm can extinguish.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. ~Psalm 46:1

Be Scrupulous: Choosing Integrity Over Shortcuts

In a world that often prioritizes instant gratification and quick success, the need for men and women to embrace scrupulousness has never been more critical. The erosion of ethical behavior and the temptation to cut corners in pursuit of our goals are becoming alarmingly common. It’s high time we reevaluate our values and look to Jesus as a foundation for a more principled life.
The Instant Gratification Mentality
All around us, we witness a growing number of people who are willing to take shortcuts to achieve their objectives. Consider this recent example: While teaching my students how to set up accounts on various print-on-demand platforms to sell their digital art and graphic designs, I discovered that many of these platforms had age restrictions, typically requiring users to be 18 years or older.
When I informed my students of these restrictions and shared that I had emailed their parents with instructions on setting up accounts, a surprising number of them asked if we could simply lie about their age and set up the accounts now…in class…today. This scenario sadly illustrates a growing trend, especially among younger adults and children, where rules and laws are seen as mere obstacles to be circumvented. Inconveniences on a path to gratification.
The Curse Of “Instant Gratification”
As a teacher and observer of the next generation, I noticed a foundational pillar to this problem lies in the era of instant gratification that we currently inhabit. We’ve grown accustomed to getting what we want quickly and with minimal effort. Want a pizza in 5-10 minutes? Done! Want to stream your favorite movie in under 30 seconds? Done! Want to publicly criticize someone who hurt your feelings in one minute or less? Done! We live in an age where access to an abundance of resources and information is just a click away. We’ve lost the value in “good things come to those who wait.”
There is quite a bit of value in working hard for something, seeing it to completion, and then reflecting on the effort and time that was put into the success of the endeavor. We’re slowly losing that sense of gratification that is gained through patiently building something, working through problems, and experiencing the blessing of time as it does its work to cultivate something awesome! Shortcuts and scheming are quickly taking the place of detail, organization, and good character.
Stop Being OK With “Just a Little Bad”
What’s particularly disheartening is the rationalization that often accompanies these shortcuts. When asked whether disobeying rules and laws is the right thing to do, many individuals respond with phrases like, “It’s just a little bad,” or “It won’t hurt anybody.” However, the fact remains: bad is bad, whether it’s a little or a lot.
Let’s revisit a story that underscores this point. A father’s children once asked to go see a “blockbuster movie” that had some inappropriate content. The father, being responsible, researched the movie and found it unsuitable for his family due to explicit language and scenes. When he informed his children of this decision, they argued, “But it’s only a little bad. There’s just a little bit of cussing, nudity, and inappropriate behavior.”
In a clever response, the father agreed to take them to the movie but insisted on baking cookies first. The children eagerly indulged in the cookies, devouring five each, only to discover that their dad had told them he’d added “just a little bit of cat poop” to the cookie dough.
Naturally, their reaction was one of disgust, and they spat out the cookies, questioning their father’s actions. His response was profound: “Oh, it was just a little cat poop. It wasn’t much… just a little.” The lesson was clear: “Just a little” of something bad is still unacceptable.
Be Scrupulous!
What we’re witnessing in society today is a lack of scruples—the absence of moral and ethical principles that should guide our actions. In a world obsessed with shortcuts, unethical means to an end, and immoral paths to so-called “success,” we must rise above this tide.
To be scrupulous means adhering to a higher moral standard, one that doesn’t compromise ethics or integrity for immediate gain. It’s about valuing honesty, fairness, and justice over shortcuts and deception.
Wisdom From The Word!
A great piece of biblical scripture that conveys the concept of being scrupulous can be found in Matthew 5:8: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
Here, God teaches us that those who have pure and scrupulous hearts, free from deceit and moral impurity, will have a closer connection to God and His divine presence. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a high standard of moral purity and integrity in one’s thoughts, actions, and intentions.
Bottom Line Y’all…
In a world that often blurs the lines between right and wrong, let us turn to Jesus as our foundation for a more scrupulous life. He provides the guidance and principles needed to navigate the complexities of modern society while maintaining our moral compass. Embracing scrupulousness is not just a personal choice; it’s a call to be better, to do better, and to strive for a world where integrity prevails over expediency.
