I wanted to take some time and build upon our last blogpost. I want to highlight the importance of surrounding ourselves with the very best “tribe members” we can find. Our tribe will eventually be one of our greatest assets as we strive to fulfill our dreams!
In case you haven’t read or heard by now…my goals for the next year are HUGE!!! Starting on September 30th, then over the course of the next 12 months, I plan on running a 5K, then running a 10K, the a half marathon, then a marathon, then a 50K ultramarathon, and finally a 50 mile ultramarathon. I know! We’ll see how it turns out! That’s why I believe it’s imperative for me to surround myself with the right people.
Starting from Scratch
Let’s be honest; we all start somewhere. If you’ve never been much of a runner (LIKE ME), the thought of completing a 5K might feel like climbing a mountain. But here’s where the magic begins: the company you keep.
The Power of Positive Influence
Surrounding yourself with individuals who share your passion for running (or whatever goals and dreams you may have) or possess the experience and knowledge you lack can be a game-changer. These key people can provide invaluable insights, tips, and the motivation you need to keep going day after day.
Scaling New Heights
As I progress from a 5K to a 10K, then tackle a half marathon, and eventually set my sights on a marathon, these running companions become my support system. They celebrate my achievements, offer encouragement during tough times, and hold me accountable to my milestones and goals.
Now, picture this: I’m contemplating a 50K or even a 50-mile race. The road ahead is long and grueling, filled with physical and mental challenges. But guess what? I’ve got my tribe.
Why This Mindset Matters
1. Motivation: Surrounding yourself with people who’ve already achieved what you’re striving for can be incredibly motivating. Their stories of triumph will fuel your determination.
2. Accountability: When you’ve committed to a goal or dream (like running an ultramarathon), knowing that your buddies are counting on you to show up can keep you on track, even on those days when you’d rather stay in bed.
3. Knowledge Sharing: Experienced mentors can share plans, tips, and strategies for staying on track and aimed at you goal. Learning from their mistakes can save you from unnecessary setbacks.
4. Mental Toughness: Working to bring our dreams to fruition (in my case, long-distance running) is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Having friends who understand this and can offer mental support is priceless.
Wisdom From The Word:
The Bible encapsulates the idea of surrounding yourself with the right people and seeking support in your journey in Proverbs 27:17:
“Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another.”
This passage emphasizes the importance of positive and supportive relationships, where individuals help each other grow, improve, and become better versions of themselves. It highlights the value of seeking out like-minded individuals who can uplift and support us on our path towards fulfilling our dreams.
Bottom Line Y’all…
THE COMPANY WE KEEP IS A REFLECTION OF OUR GOALS, DREAMS, AND ASPIRATIONS!
For me, the path from a 5K to a 50-mile race is going to be an incredible journey filled with personal growth and achievement. I cannot go it alone. I’m going to need local running clubs, online communities, and training partners to be my guiding light and my greatest source of inspiration.
I honestly believe that by surrounding myself with the right people, there’s no limit to what I can achieve.
Likewise, I encourage you to find your tribe, and start chasing your dreams! The race of life (see what I did there) was not meant to be run alone. Seek out others who have “been there, done that”. Hop into online communities and forums and ask questions (TONS OF QUESTIONS). Build your tribe and start knocking out milestones on the way to achieving your dreams and aspirations!
