Ever get tired of feeling like you’re missing out when you’re out on the town at a restaurant, but you’re on a diet? Boy I did! It took a while, but after years of training and research, I’ve discovered how to overcome that battle. Or at least get started in the right direction of training our mind what it means to have a healthy diet.
It’s time to shift our perspective. Stop thinking of food as something “they” get to enjoy while we diet. Instead, think of food as a fuel source we control, and one “they” can’t. In other words, “they” are eating what they desire, which will hurt them in the long run simply because they couldn’t control their impulses. Our diet is a lot like our finances. Just like we have to control our money, or our money will control us, we have to control our eating… or our eating will control us. Remember…I started my health and wellness journey at 450 pounds! So it’s safe to say… I’m familiar with food controlling me!
Make Smart Choices When Dining Out
When you go out to eat at a restaurant (eating at home), don’t get anxious or upset because your mind is making you crave the chip and dip appetizer and the medium all-meat pizza. Instead, lean into the truth that you’re going to be fueling your body with healthier options.
Opt for something like corn tortillas and black beans as the evening’s appetizer (or afternoon snack). For your main course, choose something in the neighborhood of a salad with grilled chicken or salmon and vinaigrette dressing. This way, you’re upping your protein without all the calories. Finally, hydrate your body with a few glasses of water (or tea) instead of loading it full of sugary sodas or high-calorie beer or mixed drinks.
Once done with your meal, you’ll feel full, satisfied, and have peace of mind knowing that you’ve eaten a sensible meal that will return dividends when it comes to your personal health. Meanwhile, your buddy across the table, who gorged on a basket of wings for his appetizer and had a hamburger with a large side of fries and two mugs of beer, is trying to decide if he should loosen his belt a notch now… or wait until he’s in the parking lot as to avoid drawing attention to himself.
The Mind-Body Connection
Eventually, our mind will catch up to our body and better understand what it means to live a healthy lifestyle, especially regarding eating healthy. Over time, as we consistently make healthier choices, our mind will begin to align with our body’s needs and understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. This mental shift is crucial because it reinforces our commitment to making nutritious choices and helps us resist unhealthy temptations. Our cravings will gradually change, and we’ll start to genuinely enjoy and prefer foods that fuel your body properly.
Tips for Healthy Eating Out
- Plan Ahead: Before dining out, check the restaurant’s menu online and choose healthy options ahead of time.
- Portion Control: Share appetizers or order smaller portions to avoid overeating.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink water before and during your meal to help control hunger and avoid overeating.
- Focus on Protein: Choose meals high in protein, like grilled chicken or fish, to stay full longer.
- Mindful Eating: Pay attention to what you’re eating and savor each bite. This helps you enjoy your meal and recognize when you’re full.
